Brighten Up Your Desktop!

Whether you are using Windows, Apple or some flavour of linux on your desktop, wouldn't a nice background image / wallpaper brighten things up?

Alan in Spoiltchild design came up with what we think is a nice attractive desktop image for us to use and give away.

We've made three versions available:

800 x 600
1024 x 768
1280 x 1024

We hope you like them biggrin.gif

ICT Expo with Open Ireland / ILUG

I'll be giving a talk on Open Source software in business at the ICT Expo next Friday, 5th May, 2006 in the RDS.

The talk is part of a series being organised by Open Ireland in collaboration with ILUG that will run over the course of the two day event.

The talk is officially entitled:
Linux and some of its friends in the enterprise

Linux and its Gnu/other friends in the enterprise, introducing several ways that this flexible system can be exploited within the enterprise. Here there will be a talk on the use of databases, email, appropriate content on the network be that servers or on the desktop. This space is so broad but we have managed to extract from the field just a few gems.

So you can expect to hear about a very wide range of topics crammed into a very short period of time biggrin.gif

At Blacknight we use a combination of both Open Source solutions and proprietary ones to run not only our core systems but many aspects of our business interaction with our clients. As a business we do not have the luxury of making decisions based purely on philosophy. We have to make the right choice in order to deliver the best solution to our clients and partners at all times.

Windows Hosting Special Offer

The last few weeks have seen a lot of activity chez Blacknight, so we may have forgotten to tell you all about some of our new additions, such as our latest special offer biggrin.gif

We're currently running a special offer on Windows server 2003 based hosting

Up until now we've been offering Linux hosting and Windows hosting at the same price. For the duration of this offer we have slashed the pricing on all our Windows 2003 based hosting plans, so that Windows hosting is now actually cheaper than Linux!

If you combine our starter hosting plan (Soho) for € 30 ex-VAT with a .com domain you can be up and running for under €50!

That's less than 13 cents a day for a full website and email solution backed with our professional technical support!

So what are you waiting for?

You can signup securely online 24/7/365

EU Domains - The First Few Days

As of Friday last, April 7th 2006, the .eu domain, which is intended to be the domain name for Europe has been open to everyone resident in the European Union.

To date there have been nearly 1.5 million domains actively registered.

Whether the rate of registrations will continue at the current rate remains to be seen, but one thing is certain .eu is attracting a lot of media coverage.

So, should you register a .eu?

If you are serious about protecting your brand name online and already own the corresponding .ie,com, net, org, info and .biz then I would say that it makes sense to get it (if you can!).

While it is possible to initiate proceedings if you feel that someone is "squatting" on your domain it is a lot more cost-effective to register the domain before anyone else does.

While you are at it, you might also want to consider protecting your brand in other European countries biggrin.gif
