Sorry for not posting about the tshirt competition - we got a little sidetracked with other things ...

In any case ...

We received a lot of really impressive entries - so many that it proved impossible to chose a single winner, so we "chickened out" and chose three!

The winners we chose were:

Jennifer from Laughing Lion Design
Marcin from RedMillion
Doreen Fahy from Insignia Plus

Some of the designs are already loaded into our SpreadShirt Shop, but we'll also be getting some of the tshirts printed by a local provider (we're also considering bringing a few to Sydney ...)

Thanks to everyone who entered!

Before anyone gets crazy ideas - no this is not something we're offering ...

2Bscene are running a competition to give away two thousand euro worth of online marketing (2000 euro!!!).

Full details on Tom Doyle's blog

PS: While I don't plug clients' offers here that often do feel free to let me know if you are doing something newsworthy .. a quick email to me directly might catch my attention...

Tshirt Competition Now Closed

We have now closed the tshirt competition.

Although the number of entries was low at first they really picked up over the few weeks we ran it.

I'll be posting some of the other entries we received before we announce the winner

Thanks to all who took part!

Over the last couple of days we've received several excellent entries for our tshirt competition.

So here are some of them below:

RedMillion provided these three entries (click to enlarge):

We've also received a couple of entries from people who didn't include a link to their websites, so here is one we got:

blacknight_logo entry.jpgFrom another anonymous artist came:
blacknight.jpgKeep the entries coming!

I'll post a followup once I've got JPEG or PNG versions of some of the other entries we've got

Since a couple of people have been asking about sourcing our logo for the tshirt competition I've made available the Blacknight logo in both Illustrator and EPS format.

You can download them as a Zip file here.

If you want to enter and win then what are you waiting for?

We have had one or two queries from people regarding the tshirt competition.

Entry format - as we're looking at design at this stage and not actual production then it's not that important which format you choose. As long as we can view the artwork we will be happy, so jpeg or png is probably the best. (No we don't have Photoshop or Illustrator, so those formats are not of much use to us)

How to enter - either post a link to your work in the comments on the original post or email management@blacknight.com

Any other questions - let us know

We've run competitions in the past.

With most of them the prize was either a hosting plan or a domain or maybe even both.

We haven't given away non-hosting prizes in quite some time, apart from the hoodies a few weeks ago, so we thought it was about time that we did.

So this time round we're giving away a Wacom graphics tablet.

Sounds good, doesn't it?

So what's the catch?

Well the catch is that we're throwing down the gauntlet to the designers and creative types out there. We currently have some tshirts and hoodies over on Spreadshirt, however we're looking for something new and interesting. The domainer tshirts over here are more fun than the current set we have and if you like online tshirt shops I'm sure you'll have seen plenty of funky tshirts.

We want a design that reflects us, that people will want to wear and that people will actually like.

NB: As we will be using the design for tshirts and other promotional gear the designer must assign us all rights on the chosen winning design

If anyone has any questions or queries about the competition please feel free to ask.

We'll run the competition for the next two weeks.

UPDATE March 30th 2009: We're extending the deadline by a further week

Horses and Crazy Ideas

People are strange.

It's always amazes me how they react to things.

A carefully thought out article / post will result in at best a half dozen comments, whereas a random musing that gets thrown up on whim manages to attract ten times that number.

In any case we have gone over all 60+ comments and suggestions about the horse heads

Some of the ideas were funny, some very clever and some simply bizarre.

After a long and totally unscientific process we reached a verdict that no single comment could possibly win, as there had been so many good ones.

In the end we opted to choose four commenters contributions:

Le Craic
Ruairi
McAWilliams
David Behan

We've been in contact with all of them already and will be organising delivery of their prizes in the coming days

Thanks to everyone who took part - you never know .. we may still end up adopting some of your crazy ideas.
Our logo is a horse's head. You'll see it in various formats on all our websites, business cards, headed paper, adverts and everthing else..

Now we've been sent not one, not two but four horse's heads in our logo's style, but made of polystyrene foam (big thanks to MadeInHollywood)

Now let's be honest, they are cool. You can say what you like, but they are fun objects.

The problem is now that I've got four horse's heads sitting in my office I honestly don't know what to do with them:

blacknight logo head horse
So here's what we'll do....

We're inviting you to make suggestions on what we can do with them via the comments here and we'll give something "nice and shiny" to the winner.

SEO Competition Winner Announced

Remember the SEO competition from a while back?

We said we'd offer the winner two things:
  1. Hosting
  2. Domain
(boring details on previous post)

Damien announced the winner yesterday, so congratulations to Paul Savage!

SEO (search engine optimisation) competitions, where the entrants have to get their site to rank for a random keyphrase, are a bit of fun. They also allow people to show off their SEO skills.

Damien Mulley posted earlier today about an SEO competition he's running, but as he hadn't mentioned any prizes I thought we should step in.

If you're expecting to win a Ferrari or anything extravagant I'm sorry, but that's not going to happen.

The Prize:

What we've offered (and Damien accepted) was to give the winner the following:

  • 1 year's hosting on our Medius plan (choice of Windows or Linux)
  • 1 domain registration period for a choice of com/net/org/info/biz/mobi/ie/eu/co.uk (period as co.uk domains are registered for 2 years not 1 year)
The Rules:

The rules etc., are over on Damien's blog, so I won't repeat them here.

Disclosure

I will be "entering" but my entry is not to be taken seriously ie. I have absolutely no interest in winning a hosting plan from my own company, as I already have plenty of hosting to play with. I'm entering "for a laugh".
