Privacy is a topic that I’ve spent quite a bit of time talking about over the last few years. Irish and EU law gives us certain rights. However a lot of non-EU businesses either do not understand what those rights are or simply refuse to acknowledge or respect them.

When you sign up for an account on a social network what rights are you giving the provider of the service? Is your privacy respected? Do you have control over who gets access to your data? Do you even care?

Maybe you’re comfortable with giving up some of your privacy in return for a service, but does anyone ever read the terms and conditions to begin with?

I’m not sure anyone has answers to any of the burning questions surrounding these topics, but in a post-Snowden world privacy, data, surveillance and how big international companies handle the data of citizens worldwide are topics that are no longer only being discussed by hardcore privacy advocates.

I’ll be heading to SXSW in Austin, Texas next week. It’s a huge festival, covering music, film and digital (interactive) and I’m delighted to have been asked to join a panel to discuss some of these burning issues.
The panel, which is being organised by OX, is being held in the German Haus.

You can read more about it in our press release or on the OX blog.

If you’re heading to Austin for SXSW you can register for the panel session here.
