RIPE 63 is being held this week in Vienna, Austria and I’ll be heading out to the meeting tomorrow (assuming Air France’s industrial actions don’t affect me!)

One of the areas that I’m particularly interested in is network abuse and as such I’ll be presenting on Tuesday afternoon as part of the Anti-Abuse Working Group on “Hosters v Malware: Tools & Best Practice”

Here’s the press release we put out on it:

Michele Neylon of Irish registrar and hosting company Blacknight speaks out on Malware on behalf of Web Hosts at the 63rd RIPE meeting.

A RIPE meeting is a five-day event “where Internet service providers, network operators and other interested parties from Europe and the surrounding regions gather. The 63rd meeting takes place at the Hilton Am Stadtpark in Vienna from October 31 to November 4, 2011.

The Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE, French for “European IP Networks”) is open to anyone interested in wide area IP networks. RIPE’s function is to ensure the administrative and technical coordination necessary to enable the operation of the Internet.

Neylon’s session titled Hosters v Malware: Tools & Best Practice takes place Nov. 1, 2011. Blacknight have become increasingly involved in educating the Internet industry and the public on the danger of Malware, frequently giving tips on detection and prevention.

Neylon explains: “It is an honour to be speaking at RIPE. I’ll be talking about how hosts can and should implement best practices to handle malware and other types of abuse. Malware has become an increasingly large problem and Blacknight has made it a priority to be a voice speaking out against it and educating people about it. Our participation in the RIPE meeting is a natural extension of the consciousness raising in which we continue to be engaged.”

Other topics that will be covered during RIPE 63 include DNSSEC, IPv6 and a discussion titled Domain Name Synthesis-For Fun, Profit and Law Abiding Citizens. The 63rd meeting will be attended by several high profile Internet interests, which include EURid, Google, Nokia and the .ME registry.
